Colorado runs two wedding markets on different calendars. The resort towns, Vail, Aspen, Telluride and Steamboat Springs, take destination weddings where guests hold a condo for four nights. The Front Range, from Fort Collins south to Castle Rock, supplies estate and ranch venues within an hour of a major airport. A Colorado wedding drone show reads well in both settings, and this is the one state where we are not traveling anywhere to get to work.
Our operation is based in the Denver area. That means Front Range dates carry no travel cost at all, and the mountain towns are a drive instead of a flight. The display itself puts 70 to 300 or more lighted aircraft into a sequence written around the couple, with packages opening near $6,500. Pilots hold FAA Part 107 certificates, aviation liability coverage is $10 million, and the crew is past a thousand shows flown.
Each resort valley has its own commercial field. Eagle County Regional serves Vail and Beaver Creek, Aspen is covered by Pitkin County, Telluride Regional sits on the mesa above the box canyon, and Yampa Valley at Hayden handles Steamboat. Any one of those can place a venue inside controlled airspace, which means a LAANC request, or a written FAA authorization where LAANC does not reach.
Closer to town the features are Denver International, Rocky Mountain Metropolitan in Broomfield, Colorado Springs Airport and Buckley Space Force Base. Elevation is the second design constraint. Thin air gives a rotor less to bite, so available lift and endurance at nine thousand feet fall short of the figures a sea level spec sheet implies. We account for that by adjusting fleet size and program length.
The usable season runs from late May into the middle of October, opening later and closing earlier at altitude than it does in Denver. Afternoon thunderstorms are the recurring summer complication. They stack up over the peaks on most July and August afternoons and usually clear by evening, which is one more reason the entertainment belongs after dark.
Darkness sets the start time. A late June wedding in the high country holds light until after nine, so the display arrives deep into the dancing. A late September date is dark nearer a quarter past seven and slots neatly between dinner and dessert. Fire restrictions show up most summers and frequently ban fireworks outright, while a wedding drone light show in Colorado produces no sparks and leaves nothing on dry ground.
