Telluride Airspace Considerations
Telluride Regional Airport sits on a mesa above town and is among the highest commercial fields in the country, with a short runway, terrain on the approaches and traffic that is sensitive to weather. Its controlled airspace covers the area, so venues here need an authorization in hand before we fly. That comes through LAANC where the automated grid releases usable altitude, and through a filing made directly with the FAA where the program needs more than the grid will give.
Terrain complicates the chart in a way flat country does not. Altitude limits are measured from the ground, and in a canyon the ground changes hundreds of feet within a short distance, so the usable ceiling at the pad is not the usable ceiling a quarter mile away. Search and rescue, medical and firefighting aircraft also work this area. We confirm the coordinates, check for temporary restrictions, and set a flight profile that respects the walls.
